Ancient
Greek sculpture, like other Greek arts have had and continue
to have a great influence on the art forms and styles
of different cultures from all over the world. This influence
can be seen in all genres of art but most of all in the
areas of sculpture and architecture. Like all Greek art-forms,
classical Greek sculpture can broadly be grouped into
four genres. Greek art can be Geometric, Archaic, Classical,
or Hellenistic.
The Geometric age of Greek art dates back to around 1000
BC. This was followed by the gradual development of the
Archaic Greek style of art which was believed to have
taken place around the seventh century BC. Classical Greek
art was developed sometime between 480BC and 448BC, while
Hellenistic Greek art grew popular during the reign of
Alexander the Great between 336BC and 323BC. Although
these datelines offer an insight into the broad distinctions
in the artistic styles of different eras, there was no
real distinction in real life. In each era, there were
some artists who would experiment with some artistic styles
while other preferred to try working on other styles.
In the Western areas, the influence of Greek artistic
styles can be seen in the form of ancient Greek Roman
sculpture statues. Towards the end of the nineteenth century
the Greek influence on Western art could be seen in almost
every part of the Western world. Overall, Greek art and
sculptures have enjoyed great popularity worldwide over
centuries. The history of Greek art is especially interesting
to those who seek to buy Greek sculptures.
