Famous
contemporary Indian artists include such names that today
have earned world-wide recognition like M.F.Hussain, F.N.Souza,
K.H.Ara, S.K.Bakre, Akbar Padamsee, Krishen Khanna, Geeta
Vadhre, Krishnamachari Bose, and many more.
However, not all artists choose to express themselves
through sculpture. In India there are many more painting-artists
than sculptors yet Indian sculptors like Sankho Chaudhry,
Anish Kapoor and Dhruv Mistry have also gained immense
recognition for their skill and art.
One of India's renowned sculptors, Sadanand Bakre studied
at the well-reputed J. J. School of Art. Bakre won several
awards here and went on to become one of the founder members
of the Progressive artists' group just after India achieved
independence. Bakre has exhibited his works - of - art
in Many locations in Europe and America and he also displayed
his works at the Commonwealth Institute in 1961.
Sankho Chaudhuri, another acclaimed Indian sculptor created
numerous works -of - art featuring abstract figures made
out of various materials. Chaudhuri's works revealed the
artist's mastery of the skill of carving.
Somnath Hore, born in 1921 in Bangladesh also rose to
fame on the strength of his sculpting skills. Hore started
working on bronze sculptures in around 1974. One of his
largest sculptures, titled, 'Mother with child' revolved
around the theme of the American war in Vietnam. Human
anguish was a consistent theme in Hore's work.
Indian-born sculptor, Anish Kapoor has the distinction
of being a Turner Prize winner. Kapoor was born in Mumbai
but studied in Doon school from where he later shifted
to England in 1972. Kapoor's works-of-art are usually
simple forms that vary between being monochromatic and
brightly colored. His works tend to captivate the viewer
with their mysterious charm.
