Introduction: Sculpting refers to the art of shaping figures out of or into materials, an index of which would include media like clay, granite, marble, metal and many varieties of stone. One can even find wood sculptures or figurative bronze sculptures for sale. Therefore, by definition, a sculpture is the means by which an artist expresses himself or herself aesthetically. Such sculptures may involve using a variety of materials which would be worked on by different methods.

For example, an artist may opt for carving, modeling, molding, casting, welding, sowing, assembling, or other processes to shape or design the work of art. This manner of artistic expression dates back to ancient times when sculptures of mother daughter and such themes were popular. Generally such works of art are built expressly to stand the test of time and hence artists prefer to use highly durable materials for their creations. This consideration was given due importance even in ancient times which is why antique metal sculptures are well heard of.

While, on one hand, expensive materials such as gold, silver and jade were used in ancient sculptures, making clay sculptures or wooden sculptures to cater to a wider consumer base was also quite common. Modern sculptures in present times is as much about imagery as it is about choosing the right materials. Today, sculptures are used for many purposes and there is a great demand for wedding ice sculptures and stone garden sculptures where the material is pre-decided. On the other hand, many modern artists prefer to experiment with plastics and resin and new-age materials for their works.
